Writer/Editor (Remote) – American Bird Conservancy
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is inviting applications for a full-time Writer/Editor to help tell the stories of wild birds and the conservation efforts that protect them. This is a flexible remote opportunity with a preferred base in the Washington, DC area and an estimated starting salary of $60,500 (commensurate with experience). About the Role
As a Writer/Editor, you will research, craft, and edit engaging content for ABC’s acclaimed Bird Library and other digital platforms. Your words will inspire action, grow ABC’s audience, and support fundraising and advocacy initiatives. This position reports to the Senior Writer/Editor within the Communications & Marketing team and offers the chance to work closely with passionate conservationists across the Americas.
Key Responsibilities
- Create scientifically accurate, reader-friendly articles for ABC’s Bird Library and website.
- Maintain an editorial calendar to manage updates, fact-checking, and asset organization.
- Support digital campaigns with compelling copy for web, email, social media, and advertising.
- Collaborate with internal teams to advance ABC’s brand strategy and marketing goals.
- Proofread graphics, maps, and email content to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Qualifications
- BA/BS in Journalism, English, or related field (ornithology or environmental coursework is a plus).
- 1–2 years of professional writing, editing, or content development experience.
- Excellent storytelling, editing, and proofreading skills with AP style familiarity.
- Knowledge of birds and related scientific resources (e.g., Birds of the World, IUCN Red List).
- Experience with WordPress, Google Docs, Trello, Slack, and cloud collaboration tools.
